RTMS: How LEROY Automation Contributes to the Modernization of Trains in Europe

The evolution of rail transport is driven by the digital transformation of railways, with ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) at the heart of this revolution. At LEROY Automation, we are proud to contribute to this modernization through our innovative solutions and expertise.

Our Contributions to ETCS Architecture and ATO Systems

We collaborate with major players such as operators CFL, DB, SNCB, SNCF, among others, as well as signaling system integrators like ALSTOM, HITACHI Rail, and SIEMENS to integrate our components into ETCS (European Train Control System) embedded architectures. These solutions play a key role in the development of ATO (Automatic Train Operation) and ATP (Automatic Train Protection) systems, which are essential for making trains more efficient, secure, and autonomous. Through these innovations, we are actively contributing to redefining rail transport in France and across Europe.

Mastering Communication Protocols, a Key Strength

Modern trains rely on smooth and secure communication between their various systems. LEROY Automation excels in mastering communication protocols for TCMS  (Train Control and Monitoring System), such as IEC 61375-2-3 TRDP (Train Real-time Data Protocol) based on TCNopen, EtherNet/IP – CIP (Common Industrial Protocol), IPTcom, PROFIBUS, CANopen, and MVB (Multifunction Vehicle Bus).

Through our dedicated communication gateways, equipped with advanced cybersecurity services (LDAP, encryption, enhanced authentication), we ensure data protection that complies with the requirements of ETCS systems. This enables safe and efficient data exchange across modern rail systems, crucial for enhancing performance, security, and interoperability.

A Transformation for European Railways

The ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) aims to harmonize and modernize European railway networks to facilitate cross-border train movements. Thanks to ETCS (European Train Control System), which standardizes signalling protocols, trains can cross borders without changing systems, thereby reducing operational costs and enhancing safety.

In France, an ambitious ERTMS deployment plan has been launched, targeting 6,100 km of equipped tracks by 2044. This project includes:

  • High-speed lines (LGV): Full deployment and replacement of obsolete signalling systems;
  • Strategic corridors: Routes such as Luxembourg-Spain and Marseille-Vintimille to ensure optimal continuity with neighboring countries;
  • Technical modernization: Adoption of technologies such as 5G radio (FRMCS) to replace GSM-R and the integration of switching systems compatible with ERTMS.

This deployment aims to increase line capacity, reduce delays, and improve traffic management while optimizing operational and maintenance costs.

A Shared Vision for the Future

The growing investments in ERTMS reflect a common ambition: to build a safe, efficient, and sustainable European railway network. With our expertise and tailored solutions, LEROY Automation is a key partner in supporting this technological transition and addressing the challenges of the future railway sector.
